慶應義塾大学 Keio University GICセンター Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses

Interview 01 Support in the GIC 2024/10/1

Project Professor
Joseph Shaules

What is your role in the GIC Center?

I teach classes and I support students and teachers. I coordinate the GIC Student Community-students who plan social events for local Keio students and international students. I also do faculty development events and have office hours for students. Get in touch any time!

What advice do you have for a student taking a GIC class for the first time?

GIC teachers are very passionate and many classes have teaching assistants. The atmosphere is friendly with a lot of discussion. Focus on understanding the key ideas so you can give your opinions also. If you have questions or feel nervous, talk to the TA or the teacher. They are always happy to help!

How can I make friends who are interested in English and international topics?

Join the GIC Community! Local Keio students and international students work together to plan social events. It's a great way to meet new people and make friends!

Tell us about the classes you teach in the GIC Center.

I have two classes in the spring: The Psychology of Language and Culture Learning, and Cultural Adjustment and Identity. In the fall, I teach Deep Culture, Cognition and Mind, as well as Intercultural Understanding, Values and Bias. If you are interested in foreign experiences and how the mind works, please take my classes. There's great discussion about deep topics and a very international atmosphere.

Those topics sound interesting. How can I learn more?

I also have a podcast! It's sponsored by the Japan Intercultural Institute. We cover many topics related to culture, mind and foreign experiences! Check it out here: https://japanintercultural.org/podcast-2/
